Touch and Go

This blog, Touch and Go, sponsored by the School Library Journal would be a fantastic blog to subscribe to! Subtitled A Guide to the Best Apps for Children and Teen, this blog reviews apps giving you the title, the platform, the price, and a good idea of the app and why you might want to check it out!

Now I'm very geeked to check out Pat the Bunny! I can't believe developers can take an a classic, interactive book like Pat the Bunny and turn into an awesome online book! This site isn't about just books though. Check it out!

Evernote

Have you ever used Evernote? This year two colleagues (hello Emily!) and I gave a presentation to administrative secretaries and one of the tools we showed them was Evernote. We suggested they could use it for planning conferences or big meetings. You know - the kind of thing were you need to send out suggestions for dining and things to do in the area and so on. They seemed receptive to that idea.

Personally, my use of Evernote is hit and miss. I remember to use it a lot, but then forget. I like when I want to comparison shop and see a bunch of images in a row, but I'm definitely not using it to it's potential and, in the end ,I mostly just use Delicious. However, I came across this blog post from The Practical Premed. In it the author talks about how she uses it to be an organized student. She's got some pretty good ideas, and if you are looking for ways to use free apps for organization, I would check it out!

Internet is a diversion?

The Pew Internet and American Life Project just came out with a report that says people are increasingly going online as a diversion and a destination.

Does this really surprise anyone? It doesn't surprise me because it's definitely true for me. This number is increasing for all adults, but most definitely for the 18 to 29 age group.

Interestingly, according to this report, this trend goes along with other trends including the rise of broadband connections, increase in use of video because of high speed connections, and the explosion of social networking. You have to wonder though, if everything becomes available online including TV, movies, books, magazines, music, and school! how will we NOT be going to the Internet for just about everything? And what are the implications of that?

This slideshow, Changing Technology, from 1996 has some interesting "quotes" that I find useful keep in mind when I get worried that things are changing too fast or that we are just technology for technologies sake.

Perhaps we do just use technology for technology's sake, and that okay. We, and our students, will continue to learn even if they think the won't because the older ways were better.

SoLoMo

In "Why Schools Need to Get Social, Local, and Mobile", the author discusses ways emerging technologies could improve education. This is primarily directed toward higher education, but there would also be benefits to K-12 - at least eventually.

Suggestion 1: (Social) merge socializing online with the real world will have lasting impact on interactive campus space.

Suggestion 2: (Geolocation) make more inroads into making check-ins and GPS-based systems more compatible with the university environment.

Suggestion 3: (Mobile) educators have only scratched the surface of intertwining learning into their students’ mobile lives outside the classroom
